THINGS TO KNOW
Reservations: Yes, used OpenTable
Must Try: Duck Sausage Gravy and Buttermilk Chive Biscuit, Olive and Sinclair Chocolate Pudding, Dante's Salty Dog
Meh: Pumpkin Gratin with Goat Cheese Ricotta
If I drink, you drink, we drinks... (Sips) Megan took over and made some throw back changes.#noalliterationhere
Dante's Salty Dog: beefeater gin, grapefruit juice, black lava salt. Megan loved it, because it tasted like grapefruit juice. Shelby hated it, because it tasted like grapefruit juice. One of the best grapefruit juice cocktails I've had in Nashville. And I typically get excited when I see them and order them. But they usually aren't as good as this one. If you love grapefruit juice order this. If you don't, then don't.
Savory
Hangtown Fry: bacon, soft scrambled eggs, cornmeal fried oysters. There's nothing wrong with this dish. It's just eggs. They were well-cooked soft scrambled eggs. The only upsetting part was the ridiculously thick crust on the fried oysters.
Pumpkin Gratin with Goat Cheese Ricotta: sage migas, smoked maple vinegar. This dish was beautiful. But. The flavors didn't match its exterior beauty. It tasted like straight up pumpkin. And you usually don't eat pumpkin on its own. It needed other complimentary flavors, some sweetness would have been wonderful. Or more sage and add some rosemary. Something. Anything. Help! In the season of pumpkin spice lattes, this dish deserved more. It was like Drew Barrymore waiting for her prom date. All dressed up and pretty, but never made it to the dance. #josiegrossie
Cured Fried Fingerling Potatoes: hot vinegar aioli, ranch powder. Solid potatoes. Super spicy aioli. Even Megan said it was spicy. Tyler drank a gallon of water just to survive the rest of the meal.
Duck Sausage Gravy and Buttermilk Chive Biscuit: sunny side duck egg, scape capers. This was the best thing we ate. Gravy had great flavor. Biscuit was soft and flaky with great butter and chive flavor. And you know we are picky about biscuits. Already making plans for when we can come back and eat this again.
Country Fried Steak with Black Pepper Gravy: robuchon potatoes, oyster mushrooms. Megan saw a photo of this dish on Instagram, and that's why we came here (follow us at @rusticbeets) This was a solid country fried steak. Steak, gravy, and mashed potatoes all had great flavor. The gravy was cold, that is what kept this from the must try list. And you know Megan with her cold food. #foodtemperaturepolice #betterlucknexttime
Sweets
Brioche French Toast with Candied Bacon: sweet onion ice cream, rye orange syrup. Megan and Tyler only liked the bacon. Shelby thought this whole dish was good, and she usually doesn't like french toast. Megan thought the french toast was soggy, and the sweet onion ice cream was weird. No orange to be had. Kel would not approve. So if you love french toast, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you enjoy other European toasts, dig into some interesting flavors!
Olive and Sinclair Chocolate with Smoked Cocoa Nib: blackout crumble, espresso gel, sourdough ice cream. This was a surprise to us. A gift from the kitchen. Loved the combination of the crunchiness of the crumble and the smoothness of the chocolate pudding. Could have done without the ice cream, it bites your tongue. We aren't into that. Chocolate pudding had bitter notes similar to dark chocolate. Not your average Jell-O brand pudding. Shelby loved this dish. She practically licked the bowl and snapped at the waiter when he tried to take it away. Don't mess with a girl and her chocolate. Megan and Tyler thought it was just ok. Still better than the french toast. #bonvoyage
Matt's Yeast Donut: bourbon caramel sauce, bacon fat powder sugar. Tyler loved the donut. Had great fluffy rise from the yeast. The caramel bourbon sauce had pretty intense caramel flavor. But overall, great donut dish. Bacon fat powder sugar, still looking for the bacon fat (or are we?).Maybe just give us some bacon with the donut next time.
In Conclusion
If you're a lover of the roaring 20's and have always wanted to be invited to a Gatsby party, this is the spot for you. Great brunch choice. This place deserves a round of applause for consistently good dishes. Excited to try for dinner and see what a night time Gatsby party has to offer. #oldsport
